Expectations
I am a Literacy Specialist graduate student in my final semester at Teachers College. In addition, I am a sixth grade teacher at a middle school on Long Island where I teach writing, reading, and social studies. My research interests and background include incorporating balanced literacy into the middle school classroom setting. In the middle school grades it is expected that as readers, most students are proficient in literal comprehension, but often lack other literacy skills. I am taking this class to increase my repertoire of tools, practices, and processes for viewing and reading images in a way that I can transfer the work into my classroom. I am looking for ways to expand my students' understanding of literacy to include the visual arts. I would like to broaden my students' understanding of what is a text and an image to help them better navigate a world that is saturated with images.
